This is how fexofenadine works

The messenger histamine has a variety of tasks in the body. It serves as a messenger between nerve cells in the brain (neurotransmitters) and as a regulator of gastric acid production, the feeling of hunger and thirst, body temperature and blood pressure. In addition, histamine is known for its allergy-transmitting effect.

Allergies are excessive defensive reactions of the body against external harmless influences such as pollen, animal hair and certain foods. Upon contact with these allergenic agents (allergens), the mast cells (certain defense cells) release histamine. This immediately initiates an inflammatory reaction, which is why this mechanism is also called "immediate-type reaction": the affected tissue is supplied with more blood, reddened, swells and itches, the nose runs and the eyes tear. All of these symptoms would, if there was a real danger, allow immune cells to reach the place quickly and remove invading pathogens from the body as quickly as possible (such as by attacking the immune cells or flushing out with tear and nasal secretions).

Antihistamines are used to alleviate such allergic symptoms. They occupy the docking sites (receptors) of the messenger histamine, so that it can no longer bind and unfold its effect. The histamine released by the mast cells in the event of allergen contact can therefore not trigger an inflammatory reaction.

Absorption, degradation and excretion of fexofenadine

After taking it, the active substance fexofenadine is rapidly absorbed in the intestine and reaches its highest levels in the blood after about one to three hours. It is barely mined or converted. After 11 to 15 hours approximately half of an antiallergic drug was excreted mostly in bile with a chair.

When is fexofenadine used?

The allergy drug fexofenadine is used to treat:

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)

The duration of use depends on the type and severity of the disease. For seasonal complaints such as hay fever, fexofenadine is taken over the duration of the pollen season. In idiopathic hives an attempt is made to bring the symptoms to a subside with fexofenadine and then discontinue drug treatment in the further course. This may take a long time.

The active ingredient is taken in the form of tablets. It is usually taken once a day before a meal with a glass of water. For treatment of hives, 180 milligrams of fexofenadine are often prescribed once a day; To alleviate the symptoms of hay fever, young people over the age of twelve and adults receive 120 milligrams of fexofenadine per day. For children over the age of six, lower-dose medicines are available. The duration of use is determined in consultation with the doctor.
