Belladonna is used in homeopathy mainly in acute, sudden onset diseases with high fever and severe pain. These are, for example, flu infections, colds, ear infections and coughing. Homeopathic Belladonna is also used in other inflammatory conditions such as teething pain, abdominal pain, sunstroke, heat stroke and many other symptoms. Read all about this remedy here!

What is Belladonna?

Belladonna is the name of a homeopathic remedy derived from the black belladonna (Atropa belladonna). The belladonna belongs to the genus Solanaceae and is poisonous to humans. In the homeopathic dosage form of the drug is strong to extremely strong diluted (potentiated). In higher potencies it is no longer detectable. The effect should be based solely on the so-called dynamization of the aqueous solution.

When is Belladonna used?

The symptoms in which Belladonna is used correspond to a large extent to the manifold poisoning symptoms of the belladonna. These are found on the physical as well as on the mental level and are often extremely violent. According to the similarity principle of homeopathy, a substance helps against symptoms that would be triggered in healthy people by just this means. Therefore, homeopathic belladonna is used especially for acute diseases.

If you use the remedy for inflammation, it should be noted that it should be used only in the initial stages. The typical signs of inflammation such as pain, redness, swelling and overheating are homeopaths as an indication of the Belladonna effect. But if pus is already present, one should refrain from the Belladonna application.

But there are also some chronic diseases that Belladonna should help with. These chronic conditions develop slowly and become stronger over time.

According to homeopathy, there are quite typical triggers for diseases that are suitable for the use of belladonna. For example, wet hair or cold, dry wind that causes a cold. But also the consequences of too long stays in the blazing sun should be treatable well with Belladonna.

Diseases and conditions that should respond well to Belladonna:

  • Tonsillitis (angina tonsillaris)
  • fever
  • bladder inflammation
  • breast inflammation
  • arthritis
  • Flu infections
  • Nasal sinusitis (sinusitis)
  • Earache, middle ear infections (otitis media)
  • a headache
  • Spasmodic discomfort
  • back pain
  • sunstroke
  • sunburn
  • burns
  • skin infections
  • toothache
  • high blood pressure

There are some diseases in which Belladonna can be given under medical supervision in addition to conventional medical treatment: purulent tonsillitis, appendicitis, scarlet fever, measles, mumps, febrile convulsions, flu, meningitis, hepatitis.

Notes on the selection of Belladonna as a homeopathic remedy

Typical symptoms and symptoms that suggest homeopathic belladonna as a suitable remedy are:

  • Great sensitivity to light, noise, touch, vibration
  • Diseases start suddenly and very violently
  • Pain comes and goes suddenly
  • High fever, partly with hallucinations
  • Tapping, throbbing headaches that worsen with every bump
  • Hot, red face
  • Extended pupils
  • Dry mouth but no thirst
  • Visibly pulsating carotid artery in fever
  • Sore throat especially when swallowing
  • Vomit
  • Spasmodic pain
  • Cold hands and feet, especially in fever
  • Often worse on the right side of the body
  • The complaints will be better in the shade, in dark rooms, when bending back the neck, sitting down
  • The complaints will be worse in motion, in the heat of the sun, by touch and vibration, by light, by noise

These symptoms can either be the actual signs of the disease or simultaneous changes from the normal state. In any case, these signs should indicate that homeopathic belladonna can help.

Belladonna for baby and child

If a child has an acute condition that is supposed to be helped by belladonna globules, it will be seen directly by the child. The Belladonna child has a very reddened face. Lips, gums and tongue are often red as well. The eyes are glassy and the pupils are dilated. Often these symptoms are present in very high fever. The body of the child literally glows, you can literally feel at a few inches distance, which heat radiates the skin. Even the child's head is hot, but arms and legs are cold.

Mouth, tongue, throat and nose are very dry. The skin is dry, except for the covered body parts. Here the skin is often sweaty. Despite the heat and drought, the child is not thirsty. If anything, the sick child asks for acid lemonade or lemon juice.

If the child has pain or other symptoms, these usually appear very suddenly, but they also disappear just as quickly. The pain makes the child restless, unfocused and sometimes downright confused.

Especially with high fever hallucinations occur sometimes, the children see monsters and other terrifying images in front of the closed eyes. Even in sleep, the children are usually restless and have bad dreams. Sometimes the kids scream in fear.

What characterizes the homeopathic Belladonna type?

The Belladonna constitution type is healthy, vital and robust. Also, the state of mind is generally in equilibrium. Since the remedy is used for the most part in acute diseases, it is also not suitable to provide a type description for the healthy person.

If a belladonna type becomes ill, feels threatened, it reacts with flight behavior and is restless. He should be afraid of death. According to the theory animals also scare him, especially black dogs. He tends to rage, which can occur very suddenly.

How is Belladonna used?

The black belladonna is a poisonous plant and for homeopathic remedies that are made from poisonous plants, there is a prescription for the potency C1 and the potencies D1 to D3. There is a risk here that very large amounts of Belladonna globules or Belladonna drops can lead to poisoning.

The homeopathic single remedy is used classically in the form of small globules. Another way of using it as a single remedy is homeopathic drops or tablets.

Many homeopathic complex remedies contain belladonna in different potencies. The main applications of these complex agents are infectious diseases and mental health problems. These agents are generally offered as tablets or drops, rarely as globules.

Since belladonna globules are mainly used for the treatment of acute diseases, it is recommended to start self-treatment with Belladonna D6 or Belladonna D12. To quickly see success, repeat the dose several times a day. If the symptoms are more pronounced, if the patient is severely affected, or if the symptoms persist for a longer time, it is best to resort to Belladonna C30. One should not take this potency so often and observe more closely between the gifts, if an improvement has begun.

Belladonna is said to be very effective in acute illnesses. If it is the right remedy, it is usually expected to improve significantly within two hours. It does not matter if you choose a Belladonna D6 dosage or the Belladonna C30 dosage. For both potencies a clear belladonna effect must be visible.

Higher potencies, such as Belladonna C200, should only be used as prescribed by a homeopath. They are used in severe acute disease processes or in selected chronic diseases. In such cases self-treatment should be foreseen.

Homeopathic medicines have no side effects, but in cases of first aggravation must be taken belladonna to be interrupted. With self-medication, the symptoms should improve quickly.
